Abe debuted as the Director for “SD Gundam Force” and then directed many Ultraman films since. He is active not only in animation but also in special effects and live-action.
The legend has landed! Director and visual coordinator Abe Yuichi was born in Sakata, Yamagata prefecture Japan and began his love for film at Sakata Higashi High School where he and his movie club created amateur films. His continued love for film led him to graduate in 1989 top of his class in the production department of what is now the Japan Institute of the Moving Image, only after graduating with a physics degree from Shizuoka University three years prior. This man of many talents worked as an assistant director to icons like Shinji Somai and Tesuo Shinohara, eventually landing the debut position of director on the superhero television series Ultraman Nexus and on the live-action film Jam Films S. His ever-expanding knowledge later brought him to direct the classic anime series SD Gundam Force. The anime itself is the first of its kind to use full CG for a long-running television series.
Throughout the years he has become one of the leading directors in the Ultraman franchise, creating movies and tv shows such as Ultraman Zero The Movie: Super Deciding Fight! The Belial Galactic Empire, Ultraman Nexus, Ultraman Mebius, Ultraman X, and Ultraman Orb. But he isn’t just known for his superheroes, because it was his live-action adaptation of the anime Prince of Tennis that had fans from all around the world praising his craftsmanship. His continued work with famed animes like Sgt. Frog, The Girl in Twilight, and Sengoku Basara Moonlight Party Remix display his greater depth in genre crossover and in recent years his work extended to VFX and storyboards. Such skills were featured in movies and series like Ultraman Zearth 2: Superhuman Big Battle – Light and Shadow, Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna: Warriors of the Star of Light, Ultraman Tiga, Ultraman Dyna & Ultraman Gaia: The Battle in Hyperspace, Exploding Rook, Monkart, Mini Force, Pingu in the City, Kengan Ashura, and Vinland Saga! Not limited in his abilities, Yuichi’s CG work has also been seen in animes like Carino Coni and the movie Godzilla Final Wars. Let’s join together to welcome him this year to Anime Matsuri 2020!!!!
